The L.A.FANS Public Use Data are available in two formats:

• SAS Transport files
• Stata Version 8 files

There are 13 separate data files, each with its own variable codebook. The SAS Transport files and variable codebooks are in a single zip file and the Stata files plus codebooks are in a separate single zip file. The zip files are about 6 to 7 MB in size. When unzipped, the SAS transport files take up around 98 MB and the Stata files around 60 MB. If your web browser is set so that files are automatically uncompressed when downloaded, you may want to turn off that option.

Documentation for the L.A.FANS Public Use Data consists of a codebook which includes the individual data file codebooks as an appendix. The first two sections of the codebook describe survey design, fieldwork, response rates, weights, data entry, and data cleaning. The last four sections discuss data structure and conventions and provide guidance on identifying and linking various types of people within the data. The appendices include occupation and industry codes, as well as the individual data file codebooks for the Public Use Data and for the Restricted Data, Versions 1-3. The L.A.FANS-1 codebook is available in PDF format.
